Architecture and Urban Planning · Final thesis · 2022

The fight is feminist because the favela is feminine.

"A luta é feminista porque a favela é feminina: intervenção urbana em favela sob o viés de gênero."

The research

Three years on the feminization of Brazil's housing deficit.

Most people living in Brazil's favelas are women, and many of them are the head of the household: the main income, usually raising children. I spent three years of my degree getting to that finding and then putting it at the center of an urban proposal.

  1. Year 1

How favelas form across Brazilian territory: socioeconomic data, density and population, mapped onto the land to see the patterns.

  2. Year 2

The cut that changed the research: most favela residents are women, and most are the head of their family.

  3. Year 3

The final thesis: interviews in the favela, data from many sources and authors, and an urban intervention for Vila Prudente, one of São Paulo's first favelas, with the women who live there as the main actors.

The thesis was defended before an external examining board of researchers in the field.
